    ‘Twilight’ clobbers ‘Iron Man’ for opening day glory

    Edward Cullen & Co. sucked up $35.7 million on “Twilight’s” opening day Friday, beating the first-day numbers once posted by heavyweights “Iron Man” ($35.2 million), “The Return of the King” ($34.5 million) and the first “Harry Potter” ($32.3 million).

    That puts the vampire romance at No. 14 in all-time opening day grosses, according to boxofficemojo.com. The top, of course, is “The Dark Knight,” which took in $67.2 million on July 18 alone.

    It didn’t hurt that “Twilight’s” midnight screenings grossed $7 million. Some observers predict the movie’s full weekend box office will top $60 million, maybe even $70 million.

    I wonder how much it will rake in by the end of the week.  Does anyone know if it's any good?

    Have a happy Thanksgiving!

    Gnomic Poem

    This is a English assignment from the McPhee.  This year, we've been studying Celtic literature.  Very interesting.  We just finished a book called Celtic Fire.  It was a compilation of stories about different European saints in the British Isles, poems written by them, and Catachisms.  The style of the following poem is called "gnome", a popular Welsh literary form.  There's a maxim followed by a series of seemingly unrelated images.

    There were tons of different styles of poetry in the book, but this one appealed to me the most.  I hope you like it.

    Gnomic Poem
    by Emma C.

    Cold is Winter.  The days when Winter
    Sighs, his bitter breath blowing.
    Icy is the heart of he whom knoweth
    Not the truth of the Lord.

    The wind is a druid, raising his
    Voice in a curse.  Ev’n the roaring
    of the oceans mighty are
    Ordered by the King
        of Heaven.

    The strength of the lion is
    Like the pow’r of kings.
    A man and a mouse are alike
    In this:  God made them all.

    A serpent’s head is crushed
    By a heel, though leaving a
    Sting of great reproach.  Hurtful are
    The words of a brother given
    In rebuke: But sweet are
    The fruit of that sting in
        the end.

    I love this hymn. :)
    Set to the tune 'Ein Feste Burg'.

    A mighty fortress is our God,
    A bulwarck never failing;
    Our helper He amidst the flood
    Of mortal ills prevailing.
    For still out ancient foe
    Doth seek to work us woe;
    his craft and pow'r are great,
    And armed with cruel hate
    On earth is not his equal.

    Did we in our own strength confide,
    Our striving would be losing,
    Were not the righht Man on our side,
    The Man of God's own choosing.
    Dost ask who that may be?
    Christ Jesus, it is He;
    Lord Sabaoth His name,
    From age to age the same,
    And He must win the battle.

    And though this world with devils filled,
    Should threaten to undo us,
    We will not fear for God hath willed
    His truth to triumph through us.
    The prince of darkness grim,
    we tremble not for him;
    his rage we can endure
    For, lo, his doom is sure:
    One little word shall fell him.

    That word above all earthly pow'rs,
    No thanks to them, abideth;
    The Spirit and the gifts are ours
    Through Him who with us sideth.
    Let goods and kindred go,
    This mortal life also;
    The body they may kill;
    God's truth abideth still,
    His kingdom is forever.

About Me

  • *At the climax of Mirrormask* Helena: "Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" Valentine: "Exactly. If we put little wheels on the bottoms of our shoes, we could just roll around everywhere."
